Costume Throughout the Ages

Historical costumes also provide a wealth of inspiration and ideas for designers, which they adapt to our  modern lifestyles. Through knowing these sources of inspiration, you will truly understand the designs that you will find yourself working with as a stylist, which will in fact make you more confident creatively.
However, care should be taken not to use these too literally in case they look like an actual costume rather than the new trends inspired by the past.
In discussing trends, you will also find it interesting to see the many references today, in the ancient garments of the past. In Tutorial One, you got a taste for the modern-day 20-year cycle, after reading the history below you should be able to spot a 2000 year cycle!
None of this means that today’s trends aren’t original. We have many cutting edge designers creating fashions that are unique and modern. However, it is fun to have a firm understanding of fashion’s history to perhaps see where a little of their inspiration comes from.
The civilisations discussed below were true innovators in finding realistic solutions to their clothing needs.
This is a basic element of fashion which we still can’t get away from today. Clothes in their most simple form are only meant to cover to provide warmth, protection, and perhaps a little modesty. Fashion and trends are something entirely different.
The garments we will discuss were usually worn by the wealthy classes. Due to wealth and positions of influence, this class was generally the first to establish and spread new trends. Some trends did filter down to achieve mass acceptance, but they were usually simplified to suit the practical requirements of working people, and so did not reach the extremes of the more fashion-conscious
